Las Vegas is in the desert but the terrain around the city has been described as moonscape, rough and rocky. Las Vegas RaZoR Adventures has a permit with the Bureau of Land Management to use the only sand dunes close to Las Vegas, about 15 minutes North of the Las Vegas Strip. Dumont Dunes is the next closest, about 100 mile drive.
Nellis Air Force Base is a training base and there is a definite military presence in this area. While it is rare to see a bombing training mission like this, A-10's are often seen practicing around the dune area. Fighters, bombers, helicopters and the occasional Hummvee/large truck convoy through the desert are a daily occurrence. Nellis hosts air combat exercises such as Exercise Red Flag and close air support exercises such as Green Flag-West, planes are flying overhead nonstop on those days.
